Oleta Trail Action Alert! (help needed!)
Oleta trails in danger
Many of us have seen the destruction of Quiet Waters park after the parks dept used the hurricanes as an excuse to remove all the exotic trees, and in the process completely destroy one of the best trails in south Florida. Now it seems Quiet Waters may face the same fate. Whats next, Markham? Amelia?
While experts say that exotic removal is necessary, from a park users standpoint the methods used often leave the land looking less like a park and more like a cleared construction site. Replanting efforts are pitiful if any at all, and the true restoration is often left up to volunteer groups.
To further add insult to injury, the parks dept dares to threaten to close parks due to budget constraints while spending tens of thousands-maybe millions - in this supposed 'restoration' work.
My opinion is that if the parks dept has money to burn on bulldozing our trails, it should be done in a less destructive manner, and replanting should be top priority.
